Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (अखिल भारतीय विद्यार्थी परिषद )
We at ABVP have unflinching faith and conviction in the following ideas:
1) Unity and integrity of Bharat is sacred and non-negotiable.
2) Bharatiya philosophies unique definition of how the relationship between any individual should be with be the society / nature / creation / creator, etc and its distinct concept of human happiness / peace provides the basis for meeting the multi-pronged challenges the world community is facing today.
3) Basic concept of “National Reconstruction” doesn’t mean that we do not want all-together a new- making of this country throwing out all old and ancient things as useless / rotten / orthodox, but analyse and differentiate between wrong ideas, wrong rituals, outdated processes & believes on one hand and good concepts of our age old civilization culture on the other. Being bold enough to throw off the former mercilessly and not feeling ashamed to accept & practice the latter for general good.
4) Our millennia-old rich cultural heritage and civilization continue to be our source of inspiration for all our endeavors and any plan for National Reconstruction is to be based on the principles and practice of “Dharma” which is the soul and strength of our age-old civilization. Dharma is the below mentioned 10 virtues to be followed by everyone in this world at any time.
धृति क्षमादमस्तेयं शौच्यं इन्द्रिय निग्रहं |
धी विद्या सत्यमक्रोधो , दशकम धर्म लक्षणम ||
5) The goal of National Reconstruction should be our life mission and can be attained only by effective participation of the students, youth and the people. Ignited young minds are required for this huge task of National Reconstruction. There is one pre-condition for National Reconstruction which is nothing but the social transformation and that is awakening the spirit of National Consciousness, Nation first attitude, unconditional love for the motherland “Bharat” and self-respect among the people.
Since 1949
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Prishad started activities somewhere in 1948 and registered on 9th July, 1949 as a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) under Societies Registration Act 1860 (Reg. No.– S-385/ 1949-50) with Registrar of Joint Staff Companies, Delhi. Our first convention was organized in 1948 at Ambala. Prof Om Prakash Bahal was our first National President, and Sri Keshav Deo Verma was the first National General Secretary. ABVP is neither a Trade Union nor a branch or wing of a political party. It is an independent social organization with focus on education. ABVP aims to achieve its objective by bringing about positive and meaningful changes in education and in the mind and thoughts of educational fraternity like students, teacher and society. We believe that students are not tomorrow’s, but today’s citizens. Hence they can bring about required transformation in social structure of the country.
In a brief period of 72 years since its inception in 1948, ABVP has attained the glory of becoming the largest student organization of the world. The focal area of its activity is college & university campus and its direct concern is students. However, ABVP is always aware of its broader responsibilities as a social organization. In order to perform its duties in peripheral areas, which are vital to its general objective of national re-construction, it has many forum and platforms adding new dimension to ABVP. To name a few:
Student for Development (SFD) (Vikasarth Vidyarthi) works to analyse and examine the un-pragmatic model of economic development that is in force, since colonial period to this current era of globalisation. SFD is constantly working to evlove and formulate an Indo-centric model of economic development.
World Organisation of Students and Youth (WOSY) formed in 1985 with a world convention of 11000 youth from across the globe, it works with a high notion of “Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam” which means “the whole world is a family”
Think India is another organizational dimension that works in intellectual field. This is a novel initiative of ABVP that organizes young intellectuals of the country and inculcates in them the precious ideal and attitude of “Nation First”
Students’ Experience in Interstate Living (SEIL) is a dimension of ABVP that seeks to integrate the Youth of the North East with the society of rest of the Bharat.
Yuva Vikas Kendra (YVK) is another dimension of ABVP focused specially on North Eastern states and
is involved in skill development of north-eastern youth in its center based in Guwahati.
Work Philosophy
The central point of ABVP’s organizational endeavors is ‘National Reconstruction’. Work of ABVP is to generate, in the education sector, a powerful national movement in the wider perspective of national re-constructions. The vision, bearings and nature of work of ABVP are based on these fundamental doctrines.
- The Concept of Educational Family - Educational family, we believe, comprises of student, teacher, educationist and educational administrator. Students are at the center of this family but teachers are the natural guardians of the family.
- Constructive Approach - Being in an independent nation and working for national reconstruction, our approach has to be essentially creative & constructive and not at all destructive. Two basic guiding principles of our creative and constructive approach are:
- First Person Point-of-view – It means whatever we think and wish, we should implement on ourselves first.
- Sense of Duty - Inspires us to make honest contribution to the society & nation and deem it our natural duty.
- Keeping above Partisan Politics - We believe that though role of government and political parties are important, permanent sustainable change will come through social transformation and thus activities of ABVP should be above partisan politics.
- Student is not a citizen of tomorrow but a citizen of today - In most circumstances students are termed and addressed as future leaders, tomorrows leaders, etc. But ABVP considers them as today's citizen which brings in some responsibility for which ABVP trains and provides a platform.
Parishad and National Reconstruction
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad channelizes energy and activism of its hundreds and thousands of young students as social critic, social deterrent and social watch dog. ABVP prepares the students to their best, to effectively shoulder these responsibilities and provide a dynamic vibrant & nationalist leadership in all domains of the society. The basic idea is that if thousands and thousands of such social leaders perform their role with lifelong commitment then Bharat will be transformed in to a strong, prosperous, modern, scientific and confident nation occupying her rightful place in the global community.
ABVP will work in the field of education for speeding up the process of National Reconstruction through change in individual students & youths at one hand and change in systems at other hand. The doctrine, vision and philosophy of ABVP is vividly manifested on ground in its programmes & activities and a few aspects which are explicitly felt are given below
- Working on democratic principles negating any discrimination based on race, caste, birth and gender.
- Promoting creative and constructive work in social and cultural sectors
- Spreading political awareness about national politics
- Strengthening national identity amongst the minds of students
- Developing a strong sense of Social Equality and Fraternity among the students
- Acting as a catalyst for educational change
- Initiating character building of students at individual & personal level
- Generating strong and fearless campaigns / movements for common good
